Governor Togiola congratulates
Samoan NFL draftees
(UTULEI) - Governor Togiola Tulafono today was delighted to join in celebration on hearing the great news of the Territory’s former high school football players being drafted by the NFL.
“I offer my congratulations to all our players and their parents for this great honor of being selected to play in the NFL,” said Governor Togiola. “I join all of American Samoa to say we are very proud of you and what you have accomplished. It is the culmination of years of hard work, commitment and passion to take your talents to the highest level.”
“I am thrilled and excited for you all and I want to thank you for representing your island home and being a symbol of dedication to excel and aim high,” said Governor Togiola. “After a very successful Flag Day celebration for our youth two weeks ago, it’s another great day for our young people to celebrate because, for a long time, this is what they have had their sights set on. And being selected to play in the NFL is the start of fulfilling all those dreams, hope and prayers.”
Governor Togiola offered his congratulations to Paul Soliai, Matt Toeaina and Melila Purcell.
Paul Soliai is formerly of Nu’uuli PolyTech High School and played at the University of Utah. He has been drafted by the Miami Dolphins as a defensive tackle. He is the son of Rev. Foto and Florence Levao of Nu’uuli.
Matt Toeaina played for Samoana High and attended the University of Oregon. He was selected as a defensive tackle by the Cincinnati Bengals. Matt’s parents are Rev. Albert and Ramona Toeaina of Afono.
Melila Purcell graduated from Leone High and enrolled at the University of Hawaii, where he played defensive end. He was chosen by the Cleveland Browns. Mel’s parents are Soloatoa Melila and Moana Purcell of Leone.
Governor Togiola also expressed his congratulations to other Samoan players who attended high schools off island that were selected in the NFL Draft: Samson Satele, Reagan Maui’a, Nate Ilaoa and C.J. Ah You.
“I also congratulate our other sons of Samoa who have joined this elite group in the NFL Draft of 2007. We are just as proud of you and wish you well. If I have missed others on the draft list, please pardon the omission. It is not intentional, but based on the list that was given to me today. Good luck to you all and Godspeed on your careers in the NFL,” said Governor Togiola.
