Peter Gurr named acting director of the
Agriculture Department

Governor Togiola Tulafono has announced his selection of Peter Gurr as the acting director of the Agriculture Department for an indefinite period of time.

Togiola made the announcement through a general memorandum dated December 21.

Gurr has served as deputy director of Agriculture for many years and has been with the department for more than a decade, serving as acting director many times before.

In his capacity, “Mr. Gurr shall discharge all the responsibilities, duties, and general authority of the director of Agriculture,” the Governor said, adding that all ASG departments and personnel are urged to extend their “support and cooperation” to Gurr in compliance with his directive.

Gurr will serve in his new post until the Governor appoints and the Fono confirms a permanent new director to replace former Agriculture director Apefa’i Taifane who resigned earlier this month due to health reasons.

At this time, there has been no indication as to when the Governor will officially appoint a replacement for Taifane, although an announcement is expected within the next three months as under local law, no person shall serve as acting director of a department, office, or bureau for more than 90 days whether consecutive or not, without confirmation by the legislature.
