McConnell Dowell and its workers have taken over the stretch from Avau heading west to the main airport intersection as they begin tackling the first phase of a nine-month contract that requires them to resurface the main highway in that area.
“We’ve moved our stuff out there and we’re going to start off with the drainage work,” said project manager Mark Liersch.
The entire project has been divided up into five different stages, in an effort to avoid long traffic hold ups and concentrate on some of the areas where the pavement is badly cracked and broken up.
“Right now, we’re going to get everything all prepped up,” Liersch explained, adding that they hope to carry out the project one stage at a time so there would be no interference with the road link, specifically traffic.
Liersch said that it will be difficult for them to avoid interefering with traffic flow because in that specific area, there is nowhere to divert traffic.
As a solution, Liersch said most of their work may have to be carried out during night time hours, when traffic isn’t so bad.
Department of Public Works director Taeaotui Punaofo Tilei says that when completed, the road resurfacing will look and feel similar to the area between Mapusaga to Malaeimi.
