Office of Samoan Affairs works hard to prepare for the
Pacific Arts Festival

In preparation for the 10th Pacific Festival of the Arts scheduled to be hosted in the Territory next summer, the Office of Samoan Affairs will be actively participating in village beautification projects, the construction of Samoan fales for the festival village in Utulei, and the opening ‘ava ceremony.

Deputy Secretary of Samoan Affairs Nanai Kalasa Afuola says that as far as village beautification goes, village mayors and district officials will be working together with the First Lady’s beautification committee to clean up villages prior to the arrival of the visitors.

Respective village councils will be charged with fixing up the run-down buildings located along the main road in their villages.

Fagaalu mayor Uso Lagoo has been appointed by the Office of Samoan Affairs to be the builder in charge of the construction of Samoan fales set to be erected at the Samoana High School campus, which will serve as the festival village.

At least 27 Samoan fales are expected to be built, as each of the 27 participating countries will have a fale.

For the traditional ‘ava ceremony, which is scheduled to be held at the Malaeoletalu in Fagatogo, the Office of Samoan Affairs is calling out to more than 500 sogaimiti (tattooed men) to volunteer their services during the event.
