Temporary public marketplace in Pago Pago
to open next month

Department of Public Works director Taeaotui Punaofo Tilei says that come January 2008, the temporary public marketplace at the former Korea House in the Pago Pago Park will be ready for occupancy.

A demolition crew will be out at the same time, tearing down what is now the Fagatogo Marketplace, to make way for a new, more modern marketplace which will feature a two-story building and enough stalls for the sale of not only food items but also fish and local handicrafts.

Locals who operate stalls at the Fagatogo Marketplace aren’t the only ones who have to vacate the premises. Owners and operators of restaurants located in the immediate area surrounding the Fagatogo Marketplace have also been told to evacuate.

The former Korea House has been completely renovated, with new paint and extensive landscaping work that included the removal of debris, bushes, and a small shack used as a taxi stand.

The building itself is ready, except for some minor touch ups like more coats of paint and the installation of much needed bathroom fixtures.

Taeaotui explained that farmers can move in to the building. However, restaurant owners can move to the temporary Pago Pago location, granted that they set up their own facilities.

Although the operations at the Fagatogo Marketplace will be suspended pending the construction project, the bus station will remain open. A temporary bus station will also open up at the Pago Pago Park for as long as it takes to build the new marketplace.
