(UTULEI) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today spent the second day on Rose Island observing different birds and turtle nests, as well the beautiful coral reefs of Rose Atoll.

Governor Togiola went snorkeling and watched the NOAA scientists perform their work of surveying the reef.

“I am absolutely amazed and very impressed with the wonderful work that the NOAA scientists do,” said Governor Togiola. “Now that I have seen firsthand the great work that they do, I have a very new perspective and outlook on the fantastic work that is being performed on these research trips. There is a lot of hard work going on and I applaud the dedication and passion that goes on in gathering this valuable information.”

Governor Togiola joined the NOAA scientists, officers and crew to dig up the concrete monument that was discovered the day before.

The 3-foot monument, which was mostly buried in sand, and believed to have fallen over during Cyclone Val, was repositioned and stood upright. A circular brass plate was discovered on top of the monument that was inscribed: "U.S. Navy Survey". The monument was erected on January 10, 1920 by Naval Governor Warren Jay Terhune.

Also today, Governor Togiola observed different green sea turtles and thousands of seabirds that nest on Rose Island.

“It continues to be a remarkable experience here at Rose Atoll and visiting Rose Island,” said Governor Togiola. “I truly appreciate the significance of this area and I am very thankful to have been a part of this once in a lifetime experience.”

As the Hi’ialakai and NOAA scientists continue their survey of Rose Atoll up until Friday, Governor Togiola will be picked up by MV Sili tomorrow (Thursday) morning and will be transported to Faleasao Wharf, Ta’u, Manu’a for air travel to Tutuila from Fitiuta on Thursday afternoon.
