Treasury report says ASG didn’t spend a cent on

“miscellaneous” items last month

In the Treasury’s Financial Overview Report for local funds for May 2008 submitted to Governor Togiola Tulafono, ASG Treasurer Gaea Perefoti Failautusi reports that while the American Samoa Government spent $246,925 for “miscellaneous” last May, not a single cent was spent under the same category last month.

According to the report, the total expenditures for May 2008 was $6,225,712 which was lower than the $7,271,792 that was expended in May 2006 but higher than the $5,970,646 that was spent in May 2007.

Based on the report, although several government departments and agencies spent more last month compared to the same time last year, it is “funds transfers” that contributed to this year’s spending surpassing last year’s.

Money spent on funds transfers went from $326,854 last May to $718,931 last month and the difference is the same amount for which this year’s expenditures amounted to more than last year’s.

Nonetheless, a few ASG departments, agencies, and funding sources did their part in decreasing their spending last month, compared to the same time last year.

The Legislature did well, dropping their spending from $573,823 last May to $517,346 last month. Legal Affairs also decreased their expenditures, going from $188,647 last May to $177,150 the same time this year.

Perhaps the most notable savings came from the Department of Administrative Services which went from spending $125,580 last May down to less than half that number - $55,086 last month.

Local government went from spending $204,818 last May to $135,550 last month, while the Health Department followed suit, cutting their expenses from $141,643 last May to $135,300 several weeks ago.

Below is a list of other government departments and funding sources that cut their spending last month compared to the same time last year:
