May 25-31 is EMS Week in American Samoa
Governor Togiola Tulafono has declared May 25-31 as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week in the Territory.
The theme is: “Your Life Is Our Mission.”
Governor Togiola said in a statement, “Access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury.” He added that EMS work is a “vital public service.”
According to the Governor, EMS workers are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the EMS system of emergency physicians, nurses, medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, and administrators – whether career or volunteer – engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills to benefit the people of American Samoa.
Through advertisements on local television stations, EMS is urging local residents to help them in doing their job, by learning to perform life saving techniques like CPR, and pulling over to the side of the road when they see or hear an EMS truck.
“The citizens of American Samoa benefit from the knowledge, skills, and dedication of the emergency medical services personnel as they work to ensure prompt and appropriate treatment at the scene, on the way to the hospital, and in the emergency room,” Togiola said.
He concluded, “American Samoa desires to continue to improve upon its emergency medical services system in order to assure all citizens receive the highest standards of emergency medical care.”
EMS personnel will be involved in different planned activities and functions throughout the coming week, which has been specially set aside to celebrate them and their work.
