Gear Up Program launches 2008 summer mini camps

The American Samoa Community College’s Gear Up Program, in partnership with the First Lady’s Ta’ita’itama Prevent Underage Drinking Initiative and the American Samoa National Olympic Committee is sponsoring the 2008 summer mini camps that will feature everything from increasing awareness to promoting fitness and enhancing math skills.

The series of three camps runs from June 9 – 27 from 9am-4pm at the ASCC campus, and is for Gear Up students and ASNOC athletes.

Each area of the camps has goals in place to help the territory’s young people and to offer them something creative and beneficial to do during the summer months.

The first camp concluded yesterday while the second camp is scheduled to be held between June 16-20, followed by the third and final camp set for June 23-27.

The goal of the Ta’ita’itama Prevent Underage Drinking Initiative during the camps is to increase student awareness about the effects of alcohol on brain development, and to reinforce resilience skills against negative peer pressure. Ta’ita’itama recognizes the prevalence of underage drinking amongst American Samoa’s youth and therefore seeks to prevent childhood drinking through education and awareness.

The Fitness Mini Camp hosted by the American Samoa National Olympic Committee aims to provide physical assessment for students who have demonstrated the skills and physical ability to excel in sports. The fitness assessment tests, along with organized sports will help to better prepare the student for a variety of sports including table tennis, track and field, volleyball, basketball, and a number of other ASNOC sports programs.

Finally, the algebra mini camp session is in place to provide mini technology to assist program students who demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to advance to algebra. This particular mini camp is to better prepare students entering high school and prepares them to take on algebra.

More information on the summer mini camps can be obtained by contacting the ASCC Gear Up Program at 699-9166.
