CMS awards LBJ Medical Center over $145K in additional funding

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) under the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) has awarded an additional $145,975 in funding to the LBJ Medical Center.

(The territory is eligible to participate in the SCHIP program, which is on a 65/35 match basis).

The funding is for an additional allocation amounting to $12.1 million for fiscal year 2008 and distributed among the US insular areas. American Samoa will receive an allocation of $630,000 for each of fiscal years 2008 and 2009.

The territory must prove participation level of 35% of the cost of the programs. The funds are included in the LBJ’s budget each year and participation in the program is dependent on first meeting the Medicaid program’s requirement. This basically means that American Samoa doesn’t automatically get a check.

The territory must match and use the Medicaid block grant funding on a 50/50 participation basis in order to be eligible for additional federal funding.

The SCHIP program is a dental program for kids that operates under the local Department of Health but fully funded by the LBJ Hospital. The program pays for five dentists, six dental assistants, a vehicle, and equipment for the dentists to conduct school visits to treat the young children.
