Department of Public Safety Afioga Galea’i Moaali’itele Tu’ufuli Central Police Station and Fire Bureau Dedication Ceremony

A ceremony was held to dedicate the newly renovated Afioga Galea’i Moaali’itele Tu’ufuli Central Police Station and the newly constructed Fire Bureau Building. The program began with welcoming remarks from Master of Ceremony, Chief of Staff HTC Fiu Saelua. An invoication was then delivered by Reverend Elder Fa’amao Asalele of CCJS Fagatogo Church. A hymn was sung by the Fagatogo CCJS Choir prior to opening remarks provided by Honorable Lemanu P. Mauga, Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa. Following that special comments were given by President of the Senate, Honorable Gaoteote Palaie, as well as remarks from the Director of Public Works
Faleosina Voigt. Next to speak was the Project Contractor with the official handing over the keys by CEO of Nana’s Corporation Mrs. Fiapa’ipa’I Tuaolo Fruen. The Commissioner of Public Safety HTC Le’i Thompson then offered his remarks before the ribbon-cutting by the First Lady of American Samoa Cynthia Malala Moliga. A special blessing by Monsignor Viane Etuale, Vicar General Diocese Samoa Pago Pago preceded a closing Hymn by CCJS Fagatogo Choir and a final benediction by Reverend Elder Fa’amao Asalele.
A brief history of the project as noted in the official program states the on October 22, 2017 the DPS Central Police Station caught fire and required immediate renovation and reconstruction to operate. The existing building as a two-story building listed as a historical by the American Samoa Historic Preservation Office (AHSPO). Originally, the building was a Barracks for the native guard of the u.s. naval station in the past. The building covers an estimated 14500 square feet.
The services provided at this facility include the Administrative, Traffic and Patrol divisions, Office of Highway Safety, Criminal Investigation Division, the Evidence Room and other programs. Renovations following the fire, smoke and water damages
were to 1) improve the facility structurally by replacing the wooden floors, exterior walls, roof framing, and interior wall partitions; 2) provide the Department of Public Safety with a new and more efficient layout, electrical upgrade and ADA compliance for operations and administration; and 3) Architectural Renovations Compliance with the American Samoa Historical Preservation Office to include restoration of the veranda located on the second floor and new finishes for the floors, walls, ceilings and roofing.
Following the construction of the DPS Central Police Station, plans to improve the services of our Fire Bureau Division were implemented. The newly constructed building is approximately 3,600 square feet and consists of offices and the two-story double truck garage. The rooms on the backside of the garage includes a conference room and
storage/locker room on the top floor, kitchenette, full bathroom and gear storage room on the lower level. This brand new construction provides firefighters with an improved facility with the exterior designed to complement the historical look of neighboring DPS buildings.
