Tugboat "Iseula" arrives at Port of Pago Pago

A gathering at the new Service Wharf in Fagatogo on a calm morning of Wednesday April 18th prepared to welcome the tugboat "Peggy H" to the American Samoa Government fleet. The vessel was navigated over 10,000 miles from Alabama by Captains Lafoga Alovao and Michael Pulu, Master Journey Asiasiaoga Velega, Seaman Able Sausualei Moliga, Chief Engineer Bobby Silva and crew. The $1.7 million dollar tugboat will assist in maneuvering large ships entering Pago Harbor and also coastal towing.

The welcoming ceremony to christen the vessel “Iseula” held at the Service Wharf was well attended by Governor Lolo Moliga, Lieutenant Governor Lemanu Mauga, many members of the cabinet and legislature. DOI Assistant Secretary for Insular and

International Affairs Douglas Domenech and OIA Director Nikolao Pulu were also in attendance as well as Congresswoman Aumua Amata Radewagen. Many members of the local business community and media were also represented. After welcoming remarks from HTC Maiava Fidelis Leota, an Invocation and prayer were delivered by Reverend Iasepi Ulu, along with spiritual hymns from the Fagatogo CCCAS Choir. Director Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele offered comments regarding the newly arrived vessel before introducing Honorable Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga for his special remarks.

Governor Lolo stated that he believed it was appropriate for the vessel to be christened and named after the Iseula of Fagatogo, considering the significance of the village and its contributions to Pago Harbor operations over the years. Governor Lolo stated that this project was one of the first to be approved by ASIIA Domenech, which elicited an appreciative round of applause from the gathering.  The Governor explained that the securing of a second tugboat was a challenge that he undertook per consultations with Coast Guard officials. With the arrival of the “Iseula” this commitment has been fulfilled and the Territory is now fully qualified to undertake the needs of the Port.  Governor Lolo thanked ASIIA Douglas Domenech and Director Nikolao Pula for their efforts in supporting projects which improve the quality of services for the people of American Samoa and hopeful anticipation of continued cooperation in the future.

An unscheduled but poignant speaker at the ceremony was Assistant Secretary Douglas Domenech who expressed his gratitude for this new vessel for the Territory, hoping the new tugboat leads to improved services and prosperity for Port operations and American Samoa. He also expressed thanks for the opportunity to partner with representatives of the American Samoa Government to achieve these improvements for the people of the Territory.

The ceremony was finalized with the traditional christening of “Iseula” by Assistant Secretary Domenech and Congresswoman Aumua Amata Radewagen by breaking “niu” on the bow of the vessel.
