New Modern Playground Completed in Fagatogo Village

December 18, 2016

A ceremony was held to mark the completion of the brand new colorful playground in the Fagatogo Malae adjacent to Fagatogo Square and the Marketplace.  The project, which cost over $400,000 was subsidized through local government and CDBG grant funds and coordinated by the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Commerce.  A brief ceremony began at 9:00 am, attended by the Honorable Governor of American Samoa Lolo Matalasi Moliga and Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga, members of the Fagatogo Clergy, Government and Community officials and others.  Under the guidance of Reverend Elder Fa’amao Asalele, an opening prayer and spontaneous hymn, the ceremony got underway. Next to speak was Reverend Iasepi Ulu who commented on how the area used to be used for deleterious purposes in the past but is now a blessing to the children and families of Fagatogo village and American Samoa.

In his remarks, Governor Lolo Moliga acknowledged the late Senator Fa’agata Mano and Representative Maugaoalii Tusipa Anoa’i for initiating and persevering to see the project through completion. He thanked the Fono and the ASG agencies involved in the project and stressed the importance of maintaining this positive development for generations to come. The Governor also shared that the government wants to build more playgrounds around the Territory, offering more opportunities for families and communities to come together.

On behalf of Fagatogo village, Taamu Iakopo spoke and the Fagatogo Village Council conducted traditional Samoan ritual acknowledgements (sua) for the assembled dignitaries. The joyous event concluded with Reverend Asalele cutting the ceremonial ribbon, officially opening the playground which was immediately enjoyed by the children and families present at the ceremony.
