American Samoa Red Cross completes construction of new Headquarters

A cool breezy Tuesday morning set the stage for the grand opening of the newly constructed Red Cross Building in Tafuna. Arriving guests were greeted by music and a festive atmosphere highlighted by the floral red and white uniforms of the American Samoa Red Cross. The ceremony was well attended by many dignitaries and supporting individuals, including Governor and Honorary Red Cross Chairman Lolo Moliga, First Lady Cynthia Moliga, Lieutenant Governor Lemanu Mauga, representatives of Samoan Affairs, the Fono, High Court, Cabinet Directors, members of the Clergy, media representatives, Red Cross Board members and volunteers.
The ceremony was opened by remarks from Chief of Staff Fiu Saelua who acknowledged and greeted the gathering before introducing Reverend Siaosi Mageo for the invocation and prayer.
Next to speak was Red Cross Chairman Vaito’a Hans Langkilde who offered a history of the building which was born out of a vision in 2011 by then Red Cross Chairman and present Governor Lolo Moliga, leading to groundbreaking ceremonies on September 5, 2014 and completion of the building 2 ½ years later. Chairman Vaito’a expounded that this one of a kind project was made possible through the collaborative work and assistance of many.
In breaking down the funding of the new building, Chairman Vaito’a credited $35,000 from the American Red Cross, $45,742.77 was gained through the local community fund raisers and donations, $93,413.97 was provided by the American Samoa Government partner share making total amount for the building at $174,156.74. He continued by thanking Governor Lolo and his Cabinet for working together to help realize this significant accomplishment. He also thanked the many Volunteers in the Community for their efforts in making the facility a reality. He noted that labor was volunteered by Pacific Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. Red Cross San Diego Chapter provided many amenities for the building.
Next to speak was Mr. Victor Woosen representing the San Diego chapter of the Red Cross.
The Honorable Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga next presented his keynote address. The Governor welcomed those in attendance and respectfully acknowledged the former leaders of American Samoa who built the foundation for the local Red Cross Chapter. The Governor expressed his appreciation for the completion of the new Red Cross building and all those who were instrumental in this regard. Governor Lolo lauded the commitment of the Red Cross Volunteers and affirmed that their duty of service to the people of the Territory is the will of God to whom we must give the ultimate glory. In closing his address, the Governor urged for more young people to get involved in volunteering their time to the duties of the American Samoa Red Cross.
The Certificate of Occupancy was next presented to Chairman Vaito’a by the Director of Public Works Faleosina Voight declaring the building ready for occupancy. Following the benediction by Reverend Mageo, First Lady Cynthia Moliga cut the ceremonial ribbon before those gathered toured the brand new American Samoa Red Cross headquarters.
