2017 Summer Youth Employment Program

The DYWA Gymnasium in Pago Pago was filled with over 800 Summer Youth participants along with government and community leaders at the official opening of the 2017 Summer Youth Employment Program. The workers will be placed in over 60 sites within the American Samoa Government and the private sector.
Opening remarks were presented by Kenneth Kuaea, Deputy Director of the Department of Human Resources (DHR), which administers the annual program. Reverand Fouvale Asiata from the CCCAS Matu’u/Faganeanea then offered prayers of blessing and words of advice to to the participants stressing the importance of “honesty” in all of their endeavors.
Honorable Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga then addressed the SYEP participants urging them help to determine their own futures by taking advantage of the opportunities provided to them and acting on them. The Governor explained that in 2013 at the beginning of the administration, SYEP enrollment averaged between 100 to150 youth and now there are over 800 participants that will benefit from the program. Governor Lolo continued that despite the financial adversities facing the government, we must continue to find a way to aide the youth of the Terrritory. He referenced the Youth Center that is planned to be located in Tafuna at the old Veterans' Center site and said he wants to make fulfill his promise of promoting the youth as they are the future of American Samoa. Governor Lolo said that many politicians often refer to the youth as "tomorrow's leaders" and the "future of American Samoa" but nothing is ever done to develop them. Governor Lolo stated that as a politician, he will make sure that the youth receive the services they need in order to become effective leaders. "You are the future," Lolo told the large gathering.
The Director of Human Resources Eseneiaso Liu then spoke thanking Governor Lolo for his continued support of the youth and the commitment to provide opportunities for them.
