Veterans Day commemorated in American Samoa
Veteran’s Day 2017 was commemorated in American Samoa on Friday, November 10th with special ceremonial events at the Veterans Memorial Center in Tafuna. The day began promptly at 0800 hours with greetings from Deputy Secretary of Samoan Affairs HTC Malemo Tausaga. This was followed by the performance of the anthems of the United States of America and American Samoa by the CCCAS Amanave Choir and the raising of the US flag by SP4 Ameko Pato and SGT Papali’i Su’a Lucia Bartley and the American Samoa flag by SGT (Ret) Ma’anaima Lang and CPL Ali’itia Tuliau.
Next was a call to worship by Reverend Iese I. A’asa SSG (Retired) of CCCAS Amanave Church. This included a prayer, Bible reading and culminated with a hymn by the CCCAS Amanave Choir. Next on the program was the presentation of the service flags of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard respectively.
The raising of the Army flag was by SFC (Ret) Talo Siatu’u and SGT Suttermemory D. Talamoni; for the Marines by MSGT (Ret) Alex Sua’fo’a and SSGT Penitila Leapaga; for the Navy by PO1 (Ret) Robert Toelupe and CTO3 Salote Aoelua Fanene; for the Air Force by MSGT (Ret) Amy Letuli and TSGT Athena Helg; for the Coast Guard by SA Saunoa F. Vaouli and SGT Lusiana Levao. Veterans Day special remarks were provided by Honorable Lieutenant Governor Lemanu Palepoi Sialega Mauga, who then laid the ceremonial wreath to honor all Veterans of the respective military branches. The US Army Reserve then performed a gun salute and Taps was played to honor fallen soldiers, in conjunction with the raising of the POW/MIA flag by 1LT Jonathan Le’ele Lancaster and SSG Silia Time. A special musical tribute was performed by Miss Nikita Ah Kuoi and Miss Malu Mauto’atasi of Tafuna High School, followed by closing remarks by HTC Malemo Tausaga and proceedings ended with a final benediction by Reverend Iese A’asa.
