Workforce Day 2018

The 6th Annual Workforce Day to honor workers in the Territory was held at the Veterans Stadium in Tafuna.  The theme for this year’s celebration was “Sacrifice for a Better Future: Auaunaga le Faatuaoia mo se Lumanai Manuia.”

The workers gathered early to await the day’s celebration with their colorful uniforms filling the field. Following a call to order by Chief of Staff HTC Fiu Saelua, employees of the Department of Education performed an opening hymn and then an invocation and blessing for the gathering was delivered by Father Kelemete Puaauli of the Leone Catholic Church.  The raising of the flags was performed by representatives from American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) and the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority (ASTCA) accompanied by the US and American Samoan anthems by DOE Deputy Director Philo Jennings and DOE Program Director Madeline Leauanae.

Workforce Day Proclamations were read by members of the private sector, Mrs. Ella Gurr the General Manager of Pago Pago Trading Company and Moeipologa John Pereira, local Manager of the Matson Shipping Line.

Honorable Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga offered his special remarks to honor the workers of the Territory. The Governor asked workers to put their best efforts forward in service to others.

Delivering the Keynote address for the occasion was DOI Field Representative Lydia Faleafine-Nomura who told the assembly to make the most of their time as employees in order to have meaningful careers.

Chief of Staff HTC Fiu Saelua next read the names of employees and local business leaders who have passed away this past year. The list included three ASG Directors, DHSS Director Taeaoafua Dr. Meki Solomona, ASTCA Director Puleleiite Tufele Li’amatua and ASEPA Director Ameko Pato. This was followed by a 21 gun salute by officers of the Department of Public Safety.

A parade featuring respective governmental agencies and private businesses next circled the field and passed by the main grandstand for review.

Following the parade, lively entertainment was provided by Vaitogi EFKAS Youth as lunch was served to distinguished guests and workers alike.

A final speech by Senate President Gaoteote Palaie and prayer by Deacon Malaki Timu concluded events for Workforce Day 2018.
