Opening Ceremony Celebrates the Launch of the

2025 Summer Youth Employment Program

The Department of Human Resources officially launched the 2025 Summer Youth Employment Program with an opening ceremony held at the DYWA Center in Tafuna. With over 500 youth participants registered, this year’s program reflects a remarkable commitment to empowering American Samoa’s next generation of professionals.

The event welcomed guests from both the public and private sectors, including key stakeholders and community partners who have committed to mentoring and hosting youth participants throughout the duration of the program. Their involvement marks a critical collaboration that bridges opportunity and real world experience.

Governor Pulaalii delivered his special remarks, encouraging participants to embrace the experience with enthusiasm and integrity. He emphasized the importance of commitment and curiosity in the workplace, urging youth to “work hard and learn as much as you can.” To conclude his address, the Governor engaged attendees with an impromptu activity, inviting brave participants to answer a thought-provoking question for the chance to receive a monetary reward, an energetic moment that further inspired excitement and participation.

Leaders from the Department of Human Resources, including Director Titiaoalii Dr. Asenati Saau-Umi and Deputy Director of the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act, Falo Johansson spoke on this year's theme, “Learning Is Valuable Every Day.” They emphasized the significance of daily learning and growth, encouraging youth to maximize every moment of their work placements as both a professional and personal investment.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act was signed into law in 2014, representing the most recent evolution of a long-standing federal commitment to workforce development that began in 1973. While the legislation has undergone several name and structural changes over the decades, its core mission remains unchanged. To equip individuals, especially the youth with practical, hands-on learning opportunities and valuable work experience to prepare them for successful career paths.

The Summer Youth Employment Program is designed to provide meaningful employment and hands-on learning to youth across the territory, instilling workplace skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose in future leaders. The Department of Human Resources and its partners are proud to support this initiative and look forward to the positive impacts these opportunities will have on the lives of participants and the community.
