Department of Health Hosts Christening Ceremony for
New Medical Vessel

Fagatogo, American Samoa – On Thursday, July 3rd, the Department of Health (DOH) held a special Christening Ceremony at the Fagatogo Marina to mark the launch of its new medical vessel. The ceremony was attended by the Honorable Governor Pulaali'i Nikolao Pula and First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula, President of the Senate Honorable Tuaolo Manaia Fruean, along with distinguished guests, members of the Fono, and Cabinet officials.
In his special remarks, Governor Pulaali'i praised the Department of Health and its partner, Industrial Gases, for their achievement and commitment to advancing equitable healthcare across the territory. “The primary goal of this emergency medical vessel is to significantly enhance DOH's ability to respond rapidly to medical emergencies in our most remote and underserved areas, especially in Manu‘a and Aunu‘u,” said Governor Pulaali‘i.

The vessel is equipped to deliver timely emergency services and essential medical supplies throughout the territory, addressing longstanding challenges in accessing healthcare in distant island communities.
Governor Pulaali‘i concluded his remarks by congratulating DOH and all partners involved in making this vision a reality. He acknowledged the vital role of funding provided through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which made this project possible.
DOH ARPA Project Manager Adrienne Savusa also addressed the crowd, expressing deep appreciation for the continued support of both current and previous administrations that have contributed to this important milestone in public health.
The christening ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting and blessing conducted by Governor Pulaali‘i and First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula. Esteemed guests were then invited to board the vessel for a short cruise outside the harbor, where they had the opportunity to explore and experience the vessel’s capabilities firsthand.
This new medical vessel marks a significant step forward in improving healthcare accessibility and emergency response for the people of American Samoa.
