Department of Human Resources Opens the Summer Youth Employment Program 2026
TAFUNA, American Samoa - The Department of Human Resources officially launched the 2026 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) during an opening ceremony held at the Department of Youth and Women’s Affairs Tafuna Center. The event brought together youth participants, government leaders, and representatives from agencies and departments across the American Samoa Government who will host and mentor students throughout the program. The program led by DHR Representative Faasisina Loa opened with an invocation and spiritual message by Pastor Poutoa Leituala.
Acting Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. joined the Department of Human Resources in welcoming this year’s cohort of students. In his special remarks, the Acting Governor extended a warm greeting to all youth entering the workforce, emphasizing the value of the opportunities ahead. He encouraged participants to embrace the new experiences, skills, and knowledge they will gain in the coming weeks as they contribute to their assigned departments.
Acting Governor Pulumataala also emphasized the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and maintaining a positive path. He urged the students to stay focused, support one another, and remain free from drugs and harmful influences. He reminded them that the habits they build today will shape their future. Acting Governor Ae Ae expressed his confidence in the potential of American Samoa’s youth. He encouraged them to set ambitious goals, pursue their dreams with determination, stay away from drugs and other substances, and strive for a brighter future for themselves, their families, and the territory. He wished all participants a successful and meaningful summer experience.
In closing, Representative Loa provided a formal reminder to all parents regarding the next steps in the program, noting that participating youth are scheduled to report to their designated departments on June 23. We extend our best wishes to all 2026 Summer Youth Employment Program participants as they begin this valuable and enriching experience.
