Center During 125th Flag Day Celebrations
On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Governor Josh Green of Hawaii visited American Samoa during the 125th Flag Day celebrations, marking a significant moment in the Territory's history. Governor Green, a physician by training, was joined by the Honorable Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula of American Samoa during the visit to LBJ Tropical Medical Center.
Governor Green was warmly welcomed by Dr. Scott Anesi, CEO of LBJ, and Faimealelei Anthony Allen, Director of the LBJ Board. His visit further strengthened the ties between American Samoa and Hawaii, with both leaders discussing opportunities for collaboration in healthcare and other areas.
In his remarks, Governor Pulaali’i expressed his sincere appreciation for the leadership of Dr. Anesi and the Board of Directors of LBJ for their tireless commitment to providing quality healthcare services to the people of American Samoa, despite the many challenges they face. “We are grateful for the dedication and hard work of the LBJ team. Your commitment to our people, even under difficult circumstances, is a testament to the strength of our healthcare system,” said Governor Pulaali’i.
Governor Josh Green, who has served as a physician for over 25 years, praised the healthcare workers at LBJ and acknowledged the significant challenges they face. He commended the staff for their perseverance and dedication in delivering essential medical services to the people of American Samoa. “It’s an honor to be here today, and I’m deeply grateful to Governor Pulaali’i and Lieutenant Governor Pulumataala for inviting me to join in the 125th Flag Day celebrations,” said Governor Green. “As a physician, I understand the challenges that healthcare professionals face, and I commend the medical team at LBJ for their hard work and commitment to the well-being of the people of American Samoa.” Governor Green also shared that discussions were underway between Hawaii and American Samoa’s healthcare systems to foster stronger collaboration. Plans are being explored to enhance the delivery of essential healthcare services to the territory, including the possibility of shared resources and knowledge exchange.

During the tour, Governor Green and the American Samoa leadership visited key areas of the medical center, including the dialysis unit, the newly constructed maternity ward, the pediatric ward, the emergency room (ER), and the triage area. They also toured the site of the upcoming new operating room (OR), which is part of ongoing efforts to expand and enhance healthcare services at LBJ Tropical Medical Center.
Governor Green concluded his visit by wishing continued success to the LBJ Tropical Medical Center and reaffirmed his honor in being part of this significant occasion during American Samoa's 125th Flag Day celebrations. “It has been a true blessing to visit, and I am deeply honored to be part of this historic celebration,” Governor Green added. “I look forward to the continued success of the LBJ Medical Center and our partnership with American Samoa in advancing healthcare.”
