Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula Joins Samoa in Celebrating
63 Years of Independence

APIA, SAMOA – Governor Pulaali‘i Nikolao Pula proudly led the American Samoa delegation in joining the Independent State of Samoa for its 63rd Independence Day Celebration. The milestone event not only honored Samoa’s sovereignty but also reinforced the deep respect and enduring relationship between the two Samoas.
This visit marked Governor Pula’s first official trip to Apia since the start of their administration with Lieutenant Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. He was accompanied by First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula and selected members of the Office of the Governor.
The official visit began on Sunday, June 1, 2025, with a Thanksgiving Service at the Malumalu Maria Imakulata Catholic Cathedral in Mulivai, Apia. The service was conducted by Reverend Faulalo Ieti of the Methodist Church in Samoa, under the theme “Tuli So Ta ‘ai Mo le Ali‘i.” Leaders and community members gathered in reverence and gratitude to commemorate Samoa’s journey as an independent nation.
On Monday, June 2, the Governor joined honored guests for the official Independence Day ceremony at the Government Building in Eleele Fou. Among those in attendance were the Head of Government of Tokelau, the Honorable Esera Tuisano; the Head of State of Samoa, Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, and his wife, Masiofo Faamausili Leinafo Tuimalealiifano; Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata‘afa; members of the Council of Deputies; and numerous distinguished guests.
The ceremony opened with a prayer by Reverend Aisoli Iuli, followed by a keynote address delivered by the Head of State, Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II. It was a joyous sight to witness participation from schools, businesses, and government agencies. The faces of the children and the excitement of the people lined along the streets brought a vibrant energy to the day. Musical performances by the Samoa Police Brass Band added to the celebratory atmosphere.
In her closing remarks during the main ceremony, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata‘afa urged Samoans to reflect on the prayers, sacrifices, and wisdom of the nation’s forefathers, whose vision and courage laid the foundation for Samoa’s freedom.
Following the ceremony, a State Luncheon was hosted in honor of the occasion. Governor Pula was invited to deliver special remarks, where he reaffirmed the shared heritage and values that bind the two Samoas. “Our relationship is more than diplomatic, it is deeply personal, grounded in shared history, language, and the enduring bonds of family, ” said Governor Pula. “It is an honor to be here to celebrate this moment with our brothers and sisters in Samoa.”
Governor Pula also offered heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the people of American Samoa. He spoke of the deep cultural and familial ties between the two Samoas, stating, “We are proud to stand with Samoa in this moment of celebration and remembrance. Our connection is rooted in history, family, and a shared respect that continues to guide us forward.”
Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula and his delegation expressed sincere appreciation for the invitation and hospitality extended by the Government of Samoa throughout the historic visit.
