Governor Pulaali’i Visits Manu’a Schools to Assess Urgent Needs and Reinforce Commitment to Education

MANUʻA, AMERICAN SAMOA — On June 6, 2025, Pulaali‘i Nikolao Pula visited four schools in Ta‘ū: Manu‘a High School, the Consolidated School, Faleasao Elementary, and Fitiuta Elementary. The visit followed an earlier site assessment in April, conducted by the Director of Education and her team, alongside the Governor’s Executive Advisor for Education.

During the visit, Governor Pulaali’i walked each campus and held discussions with school leaders to better understand their immediate needs and long-standing challenges. His tour underlined the administration’s focus on ensuring safe and conducive learning environments for all students in American Samoa.
At Manuʻa High School, the Governor inspected the JROTC building, where ongoing roof leaks are impacting the facility. At Faleasao Elementary, he noted structural cracks and safety concerns that emphasize the urgency of moving operations to the new Consolidated School. At Fitiuta Elementary, the Governor reviewed progress on the multipurpose facility currently under construction and listened to concerns about the need to upgrade kitchen facilities.
Progress has been made at the Manuʻa Consolidated School since the April visit, but Governor Pulaali’i acknowledged that critical work remains before it can open for the upcoming school year. He expressed both concern and urgency in seeing the new school operational, stating that “a safe facility is essential to supporting student achievement and wellbeing.”
Governor Pulaali’i also addressed the prolonged timeline surrounding the completion of the Consolidated School, which has taken six years. While recognizing the long-standing nature of the issues, he assured school leaders that their administration is committed to working closely with the Department of Education to overcome these obstacles.

“I want the people of Manuʻa to know that we hear you, and we are taking action,” said Governor Pulaali’i. “The future of our children depends on the strength of our schools, and we are focused on delivering the support they deserve.”
The Governor extended his appreciation to the Director of Education, Maefau Dr. Mary Taufete’e, for her steadfast leadership and ongoing efforts to assess needs and implement solutions across the territory.
