ASDOE Hosts 10th Annual HOSA Conference, Empowering the Next Generation of Healthcare Professionals

Tafuna, American Samoa - The American Samoa Department of Education (ASDOE) hosted its 10th Annual HOSA Conference at the Department of Youth and Women’s Affairs (DYWA) facility in Tafuna from April 1 to April 4. The event brings together HOSA representatives from schools across the island to participate in a series of health-related and occupational activities aimed at informing, inspiring, and supporting students who are interested in pursuing careers in the health professions.

In her opening remarks, ASDOE Deputy Director Dr. Roxanne Salave‘a encouraged the current generation to aspire toward greater achievements in service to the territory. Speaking under the theme “Powered by the People,” Dr. Salave‘a emphasized the critical importance of the health profession and highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by workforce shortages in the field. She commended the students for their interest in healthcare and expressed hope that this generation will be inspired to pursue careers in the health sector and dedicate themselves to serving the people of American Samoa.

First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula delivered the Special Address, expressing her pride in attending this meaningful occasion and emphasizing to the students that they represent the future of healthcare in our island home. The First Lady engaged in meaningful interactions with students, inquiring about the healthcare fields they aspire to pursue and offering valuable advice. As a distinguished member of the healthcare community, she provided encouragement and insight to support and inspire the next generation of health professionals. The First Lady extended her best wishes to all HOSA participants, emphasizing the importance of gaining both education and professional development to serve
effectively in the healthcare field.
The program concluded with a presentation of awards to outstanding HOSA members, recognizing their dedication and achievements throughout the conference. Appreciation was also extended to the event sponsors for their generous support, as well as to various ASG departments and private sector healthcare providers who participated by setting up informational booths. These booths offered valuable insights and resources, contributing to the educational experience of the students.
