Lieutenant Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. Meets with Renowned
Linguist and Educator, Dr. Keao NeSmith

UTULEI, AMERICAN SAMOA – The Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa met today with Dr. Keao NeSmith, a distinguished Native Hawaiian linguist, educator, and translator, known for his extensive work in preserving native languages through book publishing and the translation of well-known literary works, such as Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The
Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.


The meeting, held at the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, was facilitated by the Director of the Samoan Language Commission Office, Director Elisapeta Alaimaleata, who formally introduced Dr. NeSmith. Lieutenant Governor Pulu expressed his deep appreciation for Dr. NeSmith’s efforts in safeguarding and promoting native languages. He commended Dr. NeSmith for his dedication and the important role he plays in ensuring that cultural heritage remains vibrant and accessible to future generations.

During the discussion, Dr. NeSmith shared insights into his ongoing and upcoming projects, including his ambitious work to translate internationally acclaimed books such as Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz, and The Hobbit into the Samoan language. This initiative represents a meaningful collaboration between Dr. NeSmith and the Local Samoan Language Commission Office, reinforcing a shared commitment to making samoan literature more accessible to our young people.


The Lieutenant Governor praised this endeavor, noting that the translation of globally beloved books into Samoan will offer young readers an opportunity to engage with world-renowned literature while strengthening their connection to their native tongue. He extended his gratitude to Dr. Nesmith and the Local Language Commission Office for their collaborative efforts in advancing linguistic preservation. Moreover, Lieutenant Governor Pulu presented Dr. NeSmith with gifts as a gesture of appreciation and goodwill on behalf of the American Samoa Government.

Dr. NeSmith's visit marks an exciting step toward celebrating and reinforcing the significance of native languages through literary works, and the government looks forward to supporting similar initiatives in the future.
